Damian SzeibertDirector : Los Angeles Film School
Damian Szeibert has been working in the industry for over 12 years. His clients include (but not limited to) NBC, Sony Pictures, Fox and Warner Brothers.
He is the leading Instructor who serves as Course Director at the Los Angeles Film School, teaching the Digital Sculpting and Character Design and Creation courses for the Computer Animation Department.
If all this wasn’t enough to establish his credentials, Damian has been closely involved with the development of ZBrush for the last 3 years.
3D Application Engineer
In this Program you will learn the fundamentals of ZBrush as they pertain to creating digital characters. There will be an emphasis on features as they pertain to creating characters that contain both hard surface and organic elements.
This program will also discuss concepts of sculpting in a naturalistic manner while balancing out stylization. This class is not suited for those new to working in a 3D environment. You should have a firm grasp of what ZBrush is and what it is used for.
This class is for those beginning in ZBrush and seeking to gain a strong fundamental understanding of its focus, design and functions.
At Phoenix Atelier our mode is slow and steady. There is no point dumping a bunch of information on you that you won’t remember or have the time to do. So our structure is bite size that can fit in anyone’s busy schedule.
All of our programs are curriculum based lasting 8 weeks in duration. Just like any school you will have new daily content and assignments given to you. On average daily assignment will take you between 15 minutes and a full hour to complete.
This is of course defendant on the complexities of that day and its subject matter. Once a week you will be invited to a live session where your instructor will review and critique your work.
SUNDAY TO SUNDAY
Every day you will have access to brand new learning material and videos. At the end of each day’s material there will be a small yet IMPORTANT exercise for you to follow through on.
* It is the accumulation of the small things we DO that make us who we are.
On Fridays, you will be given a larger assignment to do over the weekend. This assignment will recap the elements learned and solidify the teachings for the week.
Your Assignments will be reviewed by your instructor during the live Go2meetings. The day that this will occur will be chosen by the instructor as to their availability. Whatever the day is, it will remain consistent for the duration of the course. (Baring no unforeseen complications.)
*These are not private reviews as it is our belief that as PROFESSIONAL, artists we must learn to deal with the stigma of public reviews of their personal work. The proverbial, “Thickening of one’s skin”.
To all that do participate and complete the assignments there will be a revue at the end of your work and a certificate of completion will be awarded by the instructor and school if deemed justified. We will be looking for quality within the work and not just rushed assignments in order to complete the requirements.
*Although you might consider the certificate a token of our appreciation, it is one not to be taken lightly. If awarded a certificate your name will go on our certified Artist list.
When we are contacted by prospective employers looking for student recommendations it is from our certified artist list that we will provide the names from.
You will be given material in some cases over and over. This is not a miss print nor are we getting lazy. Repetition is the key to learning and retaining information. Putting information you have heard over and over into action. What a concept!
*Claiming ignorance without knowledge is acceptable. Claiming ignorance when knowledge has been given is suicide of the spirit.
Come on in with an open mind and heart, take from it what you deem useful and toss out what you don't.
Let’s get started!
Week 1 - What ZBrush is and getting started
The main focus of this week will be learning how to navigate, customize the UI, saving and importing supported file types, exercises for generating speed, and preparing for design for your character.
Dynamesh, speed sculpt exercises, setting up reference and setting up a custom user interface.
Week 2- Mesh Refinement
This week will be focused on using dynamesh, the topology brush and QRemesher to create a clean base mesh that respects the contours of the body.
Dynamesh, QRemesher, Adaptive skin and the topology brush.
Week 3 - Hard Surface
This week you will be using a large array of ZBrush’s hard surface tools as well as creating custom insert mesh brushes.
Finalizing hard surface component topology. This week will introduce 3d primitives, Transpose mode extrusion, edge looping, creasing, panel loops and group loops and deformation options.
Week 4 - Polishing touches
The main focus of this week will be adding sculptural texture to your subtools both organic and hard surface.
Surface Noise, Alphas, tileable displacement, UVs.
Week 5 - Hair and Materials
The main focus of this week will be generating hair and creating materials for all subtools.
Creation of basic materials, Matcaps, proper use of the mixer, and Fibermesher/Micromesh.
Week 6 - Texturing and lighting for effect
The main focus of this week will be creating rich textures and lighting for effect using both classic lighting and lighting generated from high resolution images.
Polypaint basics, Spotlight, ZApplink, Tileable textures, layers, classic lighting, Lightcaps.
Week 7 - Posing and Timeline
This week will focus on generating dynamic poses, creating facial expressions while incorporating timeline.
Transpose master, ZSphere rigging, Sculpting Expressions using layers and storing multiple poses and expressions on timeline.
Week 8 - Composition and Creating a final render
This week will focus on producing a successful dynamic render.
BPR rendering, BPR filters, Using Imageplane to store compositions.

Note: The latest version of ZBrush should be installed with the latest patch applied. All plugins should be up to date.
